Many of us have been wow’ed by kids doing amazing things at some point or another. I’ve seen a 12-year-old pull a Backside 720 in a half-pipe where I was too scared to leave the lip, and watched an 11-year-old kayak a Class V rapid that I have always opted to walk. So it doesn’t surprise me that 10-year-old Ashima Shiraishi stunned the bouldering world by climbing Crown of Aragorn at Hueco Tanks in Texas, an exceedingly difficult V13. Who knows whether it is their lean and resilient build that drives these kids, or the fact that fear has yet to weigh them down. It is certainly undeniable that Shiraishi reached new heights within the climbing community, perhaps motivating others (adult and youth alike) to challenge their own boundaries. To read the New York Times article about Shiraishi click here.
